3. How often are the games and where?

Youth & High School – games are typically on Saturdays every few weeks and are held between January and May. We play against other teams in Katy, Houston, The Woodlands, Austin, Plano, Dallas and Celina. Please note that the Cubs will be unlikely to play many games as there are few clubs that have sufficient players to field a minis side. We will do our best to include our Cubs in the club with exhibition games where possible.

The tournament schedule is determined by our governing organization, Rugby Texas, and is communicated to us around Nov/Dec each year. Our Club Match Secretary then works to fill available dates with one-on-one games against other clubs.

When we travel away to games, the club will suggest a group hotel so we can enjoy team dinners and socials together. Parents are responsible for the transportation of their own children to games but we can always assist with car pool arrangements where necessary.

High School– games are in similar locations to those listed above. Games are often played on Friday nights.

Men’s- The Men's teams games are Saturdays at various locations within Houston and sometimes further afield within Texas. The Men's team players often arrange to car pool together.

4. Who are the coaches?

The following coaches have volunteered so far to assist in our 2022/2023 season.

5. What are the age groups?

6. What kit is provided?

All age groups from Cubs to Men receive a kit of training tee/shorts/socks. All teams have a set of match jerseys (yellow) that are worn on game day, these are owned and retained by the club.

Kit orders are collated and submitted as a bulk order. Kit is distributed prior to the first game of the season.

7. What else is needed for training?

A mouth guard is mandatory for all players engaging in contact play (Grade 3/4 and above) and we recommend mouth guards for younger ages too so players get used to them from day one.

Once players commence contact play, some players, especially those in the “scrum”, may choose to wear a form of protective head gear called a scrum cap. These are lightweight and provide some protection for the ears. Players are also allowed to wear protective tops with lightweight shoulder pads under their jerseys. These can be purchased online through www.worldrugbyshop.com.

Please bring plenty of water to every training session.

8. What are the fees?

The fees for our 2023/2024 season are as follows:

Cubs (U6) $175

Grade 1/2 (U8) $280

Grade 3/4 (U10) $330

Grade 5/6 (U12) $330

Grade 7/8 (U14) Boys $330

Grade 7/8 Girls $330

High School Boys $390

High School Girls $390

9. What is Social Membership?

Perhaps you are a former player who would like to remain actively involved in a rugby club, or you just like rugby and would like to be around like-minded people…If so, a social membership is for you. You will be welcome to attend all club games and receive invitations to our social events. You will receive a West Houston Rugby Club polo shirt, car sticker and branded drink koozie. Your financial contribution will help support the club and your membership is greatly appreciated!

10. What do my fees cover?

We are a non-profit, 501c3 registered organization. We aim to keep our fees at a level that is fair and allows us to sustain our club. Your fee includes player kit as outlined above and covers twice weekly training sessions (once a week for Cubs) plus games/tournaments during a season that lasts approximately 8 months. Your fee also covers field rental, training equipment, league fees, website, tournament fees, end of season awards, marketing, storage unit, and various administration costs.

11. What is the CIPP fee?

“CIPP” (Club and Individual Participation Program) is the USA Rugby membership program. All players must join. Your USA Rugby membership will provide you with Liability insurance and Accident (secondary coverage but will serve as primary coverage in the absence of any other medical insurance). You are also eligible for benefits such as discounts with Gilbert and World Rugby Shop.

This will be part of your registration process.

Please note that “Rookie Rugby” is the term for non contact teams (ie Cubs and Grade 1/2 in our case).

12. Do you offer scholarships?

We will do our best to support a player who wants to play rugby but who could otherwise not afford to play due to financial difficulties. Requests for scholarships will be handled discretely by our Board.

13. How can I help?

We are a club of volunteers. We welcome anyone who would like to contribute. There are many ways you can be involved depending upon the amount of time you have available. Coach, Assistant Coach, Team Coordinator, Touch Judge, various committee positions, concessions stand, merchandise stand, donations for concessions, washing game jerseys, bringing snacks for the team to share at tournaments, etc.
